This will be my last update from running outside. My asthma doesn't agree with taking in all the cold air when it is below 3 degrees-ish, so the move indoors is a must at this point.
I am fairly happen with where I am at right now, but I know that getting on the treadmill will be much more of a task for me. I guess my busy mind is easily distracted by passing cars, and not so much by brown walls.

Week 33 and 34

Nothing much new to see the last couple weeks, just a few more miles added to the trip. With the mornings getting colder and colder it has been increasingly tough to get the motivation to run early in the mornings. However, I still get out there as much as possible. It may be time to soon grease up the treadmill and move my run inside, but for now I will put up with the numb fingers... Which makes me wonder... Why don't I just wear a pair of gloves?! That might make things too simple.
I guess my major progress for this week was to run my 5k route in 23:35 (although it took me 26:57 the day after). I am happy with that time if I could now run it consistently.

T-minus 2 weeks for CIBC Run For The Cure! Next update should be after I get done at the event.

Week 31 and 32

Why hello, Regina!
Aug.28 - 1.8
Aug.29 - 2.8
Sept.4 - 2.8
Sept.5 - 3.4
Sept.6 - 3.1
Sept.7 - 5.3

Week 31&32: 19.2 miles
Total: 223.57 miles
Completed: 27.6%

Over the last couple of weeks I have found myself biking a decent amount in addition to running. Much more intense than running, but still takes away from my total miles run.
I have also just started teaching (found out the night before I started that I actually got the job, talk about short notice). This has cut down on the amount I have been running, but it is only part time (afternoons) so I am still able to get an early morning run in before starting my planning.

Other than being so far behind from slacking over the summer, I am happy with my progress. I got my new Kinvara 3's broken in and started using them for my big run on sept.7 so the old ones have been retired to phys ed shoes at the school.

Next goal for me... CIBC Run For The Cure on October 6th. My original goal was to run a 5k in the spring and a 10k in the fall. Seeing how I didn't get my 5k in yet, this is my chance to push myself. I'm running it in approx 26 minutes right now. By race day I want to be in the 24:30 area... Guess I got some work to do!

Overall Update

So this summer has been filled with twists and turns and everything inbetween. It seemed every time I was going to go for a run or update this blog something was coming up (and if it wasn't a twist or a turn, it was a big fat excuse!). Being away for weekends, being sick, being a lazy sloth, moving into a house... these are just a few of the excuses that were used this summer.

In light of this, I figured instead of wasting time and making a post for each week that has past, I will do one collaborative post (seeing how some weeks only have one or even no runs in them).

April 27 - 3.78
May 4 - 3.00
May 5 - 2.68
May 6 - 3.00
May 7 - 3.00
May 10 - 3.00
May 13 - 3.00
May 19 - 4.38
May 22 - 4.06
May 23 - 4.06
May 25 - 4.06
May 27 - 2.19
May 28 - 4.06
June 3 - 4.06
June 4 - 2.14
June 5 - 4.06
June 6 - 2.14
June 8 - 2.16
June 16 - 4.92
July 7 - 3.0
July 9 - 2.7
July 10 - 3.6
July 11 - 3.7
Aug 13 - 1.8
Aug 19 - 2.4
Aug 20 - 1.6
Aug 21 - 2.4
Aug 22 - 2.4
Aug 23 - 1.8
Aug 24 - 2.7
Aug 27 - 3.2

Total since my last post: 95.05 miles
Total to date: 204.37 miles
Completed: 25.2%

Now that everything is added up, it basically comes down to me having 18 weeks to run a total of 606 miles, which breaks down to about 34 miles per week.

Now unless I start running twice in a day, or nearly double what I have been running lately, this basically means I have thrown myself under the bus for making my overall goal. It will still be in the back of my mind as I run (everyday), but I will not focus on it as it is not possible with my current level.

Until next time... (which hopefully isn't months down the road)

And the Slump Continues...

It's a little sad when Wapella is the highlight of the week

Date & Distance Ran:
Mar. 11 - 3.40 miles
Mar. 16 - 4.47 miles
Mar. 17 - 4.21 miles

Week 7: 12.08 miles
Total: 109.32 miles
Completed: 13.4%

Week 7 Measurements:
Weight: 201.2 lbs (-0.6lbs, -7.0lbs total)
Body Fat: 23.0% (+1.7%, -2.1% total)

These last few weeks have totally sucked. I just couldn't seem to get my sorry but onto the treadmill in the mornings before going school X to student teach, and by the time I got home I was too exhausted to even try.
I know something will change, and it will change starting Monday, March 18th, 2013!
I can't remember if I wrote it here or not, but I refuse to say tomorrow because tomorrow never comes.
Anyways, I have one week left to go before spring break, and I know spring break will be a write off for running because I will be at my cabin (although I will be getting my exercise on the ski hill and outside, it just won't be counting towards my distance). I will probably take my distances down a bit this week so I can cut my running time to 30 or 35 minutes instead of the 40 minutes I am doing now, and give myself one less excuse to not run.

Can't wait to get to the lake in a week! Woot Woot!

1/8th of my Time is Past

87 mile mark in Moosomin

Date & Distance Ran:
Mar. 6 - 3.90 miles
Mar. 7 - 3.75 miles
Mar. 8 - 3.88 miles

Week 6: 11.53 miles
Total: 97.24 miles
Completed: 11.9%

Week 6 Measurements:
N/A

This was another bad week for me. With getting assignments done last minute and getting ready for student teaching I didn't seem to have much energy left to run in the mornings. But... I am out student teaching now so no more excuses!
I didn't even get measurements for this week as I usually do them on Sunday morning, and it is now Monday night, so I will just wait until next week.
If you have thought about the numbers, I am 11.9% complete the distance, but 12.5% of the time has been used. I am slightly behind right now, but will be getting back on track starting Tuesday, March 12th, 2013 (I refuse to say tomorrow, because tomorrow will never come!)

A Picture Says 1000 Words...

BOO to this weeks progress!
Date & Distance Ran:
Feb. 26 - 4.09 miles
Mar. 3 - 4.21 miles

Week 5: 8.30 miles
Total: 85.71 miles
Completed: 10.5%

Week 5 Measurements:
Weight: 201.8 lbs (-2.0lbs, -6.4lbs total)
Body Fat: 21.3% (-2.3%, -3.8% total)

So this week was almost a write off for progress on my run. Between trying to get all the assignments done that I've known about for the last 2 months (and procrastinated just as long for), and coming down with some sort of minor flu that took me out for 3 days, and taking Sunday off after a VERY exerting Saturday of tobogganing and Snowmobiling, it didn't leave me with many days left to 'hit the pavement'.

Welcome to a new area code!

Manitoba/Saskatchewan Border (75 mile mark)
Date & Distance Ran
Feb. 20 - 3.74 miles
Feb. 21 - 3.60 miles
Feb. 22 - 3.24 miles
Feb. 23 - 4.11 miles
Feb. 24 - 4.20 miles

Week 4: 18.89 miles

Total: 77.41 miles
Completed: 9.5%

Week 4 Measurements:

Weight: 203.8 lbs (-0.8lbs, -4.4lbs total)
Body Fat: 23.6% (-0.4%, -1.5% total)

I kept up my pace for the last week and am pleased again with the overall result. I finally crossed the MB/SK border too! (seems like it took FOREVER, but it's a pretty good chunk of distance that I've covered at the same time.)

This week I switched my music choice up. I am now rockin' the Skrillex, Dark Oscillators, Knife Party, and a few other similar artists (If anyone is interested in the exact playlist for any reason, let me know!). Having the deep bass and quick beats makes the run go by that much quicker.

Now onto choosing the music for my next playlist... I'm thinking metal...

Back on track for week 3

47 mile mark in Virden. I'll have a double double please!
Date & Distance Ran
Feb. 11 - 3.42 miles
Feb. 12 - 3.90 miles
Feb. 13 - 3.94 miles
Feb. 15 - 4.01 miles
Feb. 16 - 3.41 miles
Feb. 17 - 4.04 miles

Week 3: 22.72 miles
Total: 58.52 miles
Completed: 7.2%

Week 3 Measurements:
Weight: 204.6 lbs (+.6lbs, -3.6lbs total)
Body Fat: 24.0% (+0%, -1.1% total)

Week 3 begun and I stepped it up closer to the standard I set on week one.
On Friday, I was finally able to break the 4 mile mark (not by much, but was a psychological mindset).
On Saturday, Britt and I went for a run at the BU Healthy Living Center. The track was a much different feeling than the treadmill, the air was very dry and I did not have water while I ran (usually drink ~1L when running on the treadmill) so it was a little difficult to make that transition.

As for my weight, I am not really concerned with the numbers at this point. I know I have not been eating the greatest lately (well, I'm eating better, just eating TOO MUCH of the better), so once I get my body in the regular routine of running and used to it I will start cutting back the food (I always seem to be hungry right now).

Week 2

Oak Lake at mile 32
Date & Distance Ran:
Feb. 5 - 3.72 miles
Feb. 7 - 3.92 miles
Feb. 8 - 2.72 miles

Week 2: 10.36 miles
Total: 35.8 miles
Completed: 4.4%

Week 2 Measurements:
Weight: 204.0 lbs (+.2lbs, -4.2lbs total)
Body Fat: 24.0% (+.1%, -1.1% total)

So this week was a little bit of a disappointment for me when I looked at my totals. I did not run as much as I wanted to, but it had a direct correlation with if I went to bed in decent time or not. Life was happening and did not allow for that to happen, and the result is pretty clear.
I took the weekend off as I went skiing all day Saturday and needed Sunday to recover/refresh/whine about how sore I was after a big day on the hill (literally on the hill from falling so much). I will be much more focused as week 3 begins and am looking forward to pumping out a more respectable number from it.

PS. I did calculate calories burned for my skiing as I was feeling bad about not running more than I did. We were at the hill for 7.5 hours. Even if it worked out to be 3.75 hours total time skiing (take out lunch time, riding the lift, etc) I still would have burned around 2000 calories. To put it in perspective, one morning run would be approximately 570 calories burned, so I think taking the weekend off was worth it.

Not much of a change from week 1, but stuff happens.

What do YOU think the story is about?

So a little off topic, but in Teaching Reading, Thinking and Study Skills class today, we created stories with 5 made up words of our choice. Miss L(@MissLwbt on Twitter) made the following story for me:

Once upon a time, Steve decided it was time for a parachange. He set his mind to a plan and decided to run to Lake Louise, a quite dismantic location. His first week was difficult but Britt told him "There is no reason to get all rebollucked about this, man up!" Steve immediately went outside to begin his run but became frightened when he realized the trifeedlings were in heat. Realizing this was dangerous, Steve called the instoragement officers to apprehend the dangerous beasts.

My question for you now... What do You think each of the 5 words mean?

Leave a comment and follow me to find out the definitions Kirsten had given each of the words. I will be posting those sometime in the future.

One week down, 47 to go

And off I go... Goodbye home!

Going under the Kemnay bridge at the 8.1 mile mark
Here's the recap for week 1. After fixing the math and realizing it was only 16.9 miles per week, it gave me a boost in confidence and I am ready to tackle this head on.

Starting measurements (Jan. 26th):
Weight: 208.2 lbs
Body Fat: 25.1%

Date & Distance Run:
Jan. 26 - 2.19 miles
Jan. 27 - 2.39 miles
Jan. 28 - 3.58 miles
Alexander corner at the 16.3 mile mark
Jan. 29 - 3.61 miles
Jan. 31 - 3.58 miles
Feb. 1 - 3.72 miles
Feb. 2 - 3.75 miles
Feb. 3 - 2.62 miles

Week 1: 25.44 miles
Total: 25.44 miles
Completed: 3.1%

Week 1 Measurements:
Weight: 203.8 lbs (-4.4 lbs)
Body Fat: 23.9% (-1.2%)

For those that are paying attention to the dates (and for those that aren't, you will be now!), January 26th and 27th were my "jump start"(aka cheat) days because I was worried about making it.

A. Brandon, MB        B. My current location        C. Chateau Lake Louise

I am extremely happy how this adventure has started and I look forward to the next 47 weeks as much as a I do the 1 that is done already (and time absolutely flew!). I feel like I have made a good dent in the distance, although when I look at the map above, it sure doesn't seem like much.

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Woops!

So I made a noob mistake with my math (don't tell anyone... I have a math minor!).

Total distance to be run is 1298 KILOMETERS... That's 811.25 MILES.

So now... if I have 48 weeks to make it:

        1298/48 = 27.04 km/wk (KILOMETERS!)

        811.25/48 = 16.9 miles/wk (MILES!)

Now that I have pulled my head out from under a rock and got the numbers correct, it looks MUCH more manageable!

Here we go

This blog is going to cover my long term goal of getting fit again.
What am I doing you ask? I am running to where this crazy adventure all started... Lake Louise, Alberta!
My Motivation
6 weeks ago tomorrow I got engaged to the love of my life and my best friend, Britt. I was able to take her out to Banff on a "Christmas present" trip to try out her new skis without her having a clue what was actually happening. On our 6 year Anniversary, we went to Lake Louise to do some touring and go for a skate on the lake, just outside of The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. It was there that I made the biggest step of my life and asked her to marry me. After a lot of smiles and saying "Are you kidding me?!", I got the answer I was looking for: YES! (I may have had to ask for her to give me her answer though...)

It is a loooooooong way
So more about what I'm doing...
I will be running the total distance it is from where we live now in Brandon, Manitoba, to the place where we got engaged (and hopefully go back to for our honeymoon), Lake Louise, Alberta. Of course being an average guy means I can't physically run that far and I don't have the time to, I will add up my total distance day to day. Total distance for this run is 1298 kilometers, which if you cut down into weeks (I have 48 weeks to get there), it works out to be just over 27 miles/week. It is going to be a challenge, but a good challenge has never stopped me before.

So... Here we go!
